The Magic of Light and Season


The light at Big Springs Park is renowned among photographers. Understanding the time of day and year is key to maximizing your results:


Golden Hour is Essential: The soft, warm, and flattering light of Golden Hour is highly recommended for creating those "dreamy" portraits. However, be aware that since the park is located deep in a canyon, the sun will set earlier than on the valley floor. Plan to start your sunset session earlier than you normally would to take full advantage of the best light before the sun dips behind the mountains.


Morning Sessions: Early morning provides soft, even, and flattering light, often with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures in the summer.


Best Seasons for Photography:


Spring (Late May/Early June): The best time for lush, deep green grass and vibrant wildflowers. The stream is often rushing from the snowmelt, adding a beautiful element to your photos.


Summer: The park is lush and green, with abundant natural light. Ideal for family sessions.


Fall (Late September - Mid-October): Absolutely magical! This is the peak time to capture brilliant reds, oranges, and golden yellows of the canyon's foliage. Peak color is typically around September 27th to October 15th.


Winter: Though less crowded, the snow-covered landscape can create an enchanting, fairytale backdrop. The lower trails are often packed enough for micro-spikes, but check avalanche danger before going higher.


Planning Your Visit

Getting to Big Springs Park is part of the fun, as it takes you deeper into the South Fork of Provo Canyon.


Location: Head up Provo Canyon (US-189), turn onto South Fork Road (near Vivian Park), and continue for a few miles until you see the sign for Big Springs Park.


Parking: There are two parking areas (upper and lower). During busy summer weekends, arrive early as the lots fill up quickly, especially with hikers using the trailhead.

Dogs: Dogs are permitted but should be kept on a leash (though many hikers use voice command).


Connectivity: Be prepared there is no cell service up in the canyon, coordinate with your photographer the exact spot of where to meet
